New Year’s Day – 1st January
New Year’s Day also known as New Year’s Eve or New Year is celebrated on 1st January every year. New Year 2020 will be celebrated on Wednesday across the world. Most of the countries celebrate New Year as they follow the Georgian calendar. However, there are countries such as China where the new year is celebrated according to their calendar.
New Year’s Day is dedicated to God Janus (god of the beginning). The month of January is also named after it. However, in some of the countries, it is believed that the day coincides with the Annunciation of Jesus. On this day, people give gifts to their loved ones. The tradition of exchanging gifts originated back in the 7th century when people in the Netherlands and Flanders celebrated this day.
The New Year countdown starts from 31st December only. Various events are organized in the various parts of the world where people gather and celebrate New Year’s day together. People wish ‘Happy New Year Day’ to each other. New Year’s eve is a public holiday in various countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, United States, etc. People visit their loved ones, have dinner with family and friends, enjoy liquor and dance till the wee hours in the morning.
